Hostess Cobie Harkema has been running Welgelegen for almost 25 years. The diverse accommodations have been fashioned to her style and the atmosphere brings her guests the feeling of being in a different world.
Cobie has been at Welgelegen since 1991 when it was still functioning as a farm. During that time the farm was used for cattle and in the spring for the sheep to breed.
In 1992 Welgelegen started of as a small campsite with a maximum of 5 camping spots. This has been extended over the years to 25 tourist sites; where small and large holiday cabins were built. The farm has been further transformed in the years 2005 and 2006 to include a Bed and Breakfast. The walls of the farmhouse have not been ultered to keep the building as close to it’s original state as possible. For Cobie and her family it has been a great project with wonderful results far beyond expectations. The work and attention to detail can be seen everywhere at Welgelegen.
Many original details have been preserved from the farm or reinstated.
A good example is the dining room with its magnificent ceiling in Art Deco style, which was painted in this old style by Cobie herself.
Guests can admire the magnificent paintings in the dining room. It is often the subject in many conversations and stories.
The beautiful patio behind the farm is a true paradise with sheltered seating everywhere and atmospheric elements. It was formerly the old barn which was about to collapse. The walls are still there, with the old barn windows and elements. In the middle of the patio near the pond, Cobie has her creative self-built stone oven made from clay. Since this furnace requires a few hours to warm up, it is not really practical for baking the pizzas for her guests. The kitchen now contains a more practical stone oven and this is where they bake the beloved fresh pizzas.
Fondness for used things that come with a story
Cobie takes an interest in things with a past that tell a story.
Over the years she has collected many items from thrift stores, markets and received donations from friends and acquaintances.
Redecorating, changing and giving these items a makeover is something that Cobie enjoys doing. She also sees it as an abiding love for reusing existing materials. Everywhere at Welgelegen, you will find her sense of style and her love for plants and flowers.
The gypsy caravans which she has built along with her family, are decorated with her style and creativity. They are each decorated to give a different atmosphere and theme as are the various bed and breakfast rooms. Guests will sometimes peek into the other rooms to see the different themes. You won’t get bored or find one corner that has been untouched by Cobie’s creativity.
Sustainability has become a trend in Welgelegen
It was started as a challenge to find as much as possible its necessary equipment used during the renovation of the farmhouse. Here she discovered how much joy it brought her, along with the stories and individuality of the various items. Now she conducts sustainability through the use of solar energy, solar water heaters, LED lighting, motion detectors, separated waste etc.
Ecological natural swimming pool
As an extra treat for the guests of Welgelegen, an ecological natural swimming pool was created in the beginning of 2016. The water is purified by volcanic rocks and plants with its own biotope. The knowledge that Cobie has of nature is reflected in the design and underlines its intention to operate sustainably on her property.
Cobie’s progressive goal is to create an entirely self-catering accommodation so she can share her passion with her guests, which have now become the most frequent guests.
Hostess Cobie has run Welgelegen for almost 25 years and she receives her guests with an energetic personality. Along with her two sons, Ryan and Ian they give you a warm welcome.
Since 2016, Cobie’s brother has also been recruited to support the various activities around the campsite and bed and breakfast.
One thing is certain – Cobie wants to offer her guests a warm welcome and to stay in a relaxed and nice atmosphere..
